Saw this old woman near my office yesterday when I was walking to the mrt station after work. She stopped me and asked me for $1 to take bus home coz she lost her wallet. I got a shock and started thinking to myself whether I got $1 coin. Think I got. So I looked at her with a blur face and walked away. Ya la.. even I got $1 I also won’t give her lor. It’s not the money but being a cynic, I bet she must be earning lots of $1 by taking advantage of the empathy shown by passer-bys. Con-woman!
The day before at J8, I saw this old woman dressed shabbily selling tissue paper and I almost wanted to buy from her not to do charity but coz I needed tissue anyway. But in the end I didn’t coz I changed my mind (ha.. still a cynic at heart.). while I was waiting for my dad at the taxi stand, I saw a cab coming in and the woman who flagged it was the tissue woman! So she can’t be that poor la..if she can afford a cab ride. I don’t even like to spend $ on cab unless really necessary lor.
Tried to find excuses for her, like.. oh..maybe she’s rich but she’s old and sells tissue just to pass time.. or oh… she’s old already so finds it difficult to take public transport…oh, maybe she’s rushing off somewhere to sell tissue… but tissue still ok la.. at least something that’s usable. I’ll just treat myself as a consumer buying from an auntie instead of a shop. But if she’s just plain asking for $$ by making up some excuses then quite difficult to “con” my $.
